Our bodies have two systems that regulate our stress response.
The “Fight, Flight or Freeze” response helped our ancestors survive threats like a lion jumping out at them on the savannah. It prepared their bodies for immediate action to prevent them from being eaten. Our modern stresses are not the same. We have work deadlines, family issues and constant exposure to news and social media. The body responds as though a lion has jumped out in front of them.

We also have our “Rest and Digest” response. In a healthy individual these two systems are in balance.
During stress the “Flight, Fright, Freeze” response is active and action is taken. Once stress has passed the “Rest and Digest” response takes over and calms the body down and allows equilibrium to return.
However, for many people, stress is continual and our “Flight, Fright, Freeze” response is almost always active with people turning to alcohol, smoking or unhealthy food for comfort and to calm them down. Chronic stress results in long term health problems.
How can we regain the balance of our stress response?
